Our Introduction to UK Chemistry Aerosol (UKCA) Model course provides practical experience of running a community chemistry-aerosol climate model.
The UKCA model is based on the Met Office Unified Model and the atmospheric composition module of the UK Earth System Model.
You will receive support from expert UKCA users at the National Centre for Atmospheric Science and gain experience of setting up and running experiments on the model.
Two courses are provided, an introductory in-person course at the University of Leeds and an advanced course available online.
How to apply
Students can apply to attend the in-person Introduction to UKCA course, which will include access to the Advanced UKCA module, or they can apply for access to the Advanced module only.

Prerequisites
Students should ideally have knowledge of Fortran, Python, the Unified Model, FCM, Rose, and Cylc.
Teaching staff
Computer modellers from the National Centre for Atmospheric Science and our research partners will introduce you to the UKCA.
Course schedule
The in-person course will take place over 3 days, where students will connect to dedicated computers to work through the course material.
The advanced course is self-guided and can be started at any time. It should be completed within a 3-week window.
Costs
There is no charge to attend the UKCA courses as this course has been funded by the NERC Delivering training courses for environmental scientists 2024 scheme.
All tuition, activities, and materials, as well as accomodation and reasonable travel and subsistence costs are included.

Travel and accommodation
Accommodation will be provided and reasonable travel and subsistence costs made travelling to/from Leeds within the UK will be reimbursed.
Terms and conditions
Cancellations/ refunds – No Course Fee
No charge will be made where the cancellation is made more than six weeks before the date of the training course.
In the event of cancellation made within six weeks immediately prior to the training course an invoice will be issued to the amount of a non-funded place on the course.
In the event that a place can be filled by another student no fee will be charged.

Amendments and cancellations
It may be necessary for us to change the content and timing of a course, the staff, the date or the venue. In the unlikely event of the course being cancelled, we will provide a full refund. For all bookings, the liability of the National Centre for Atmospheric Science/University of Leeds shall be limited to the amount of the fee paid to the National Centre for Atmospheric Science/University of Leeds by the delegate.
